30 DBC: Day 15

Day 15 – Favorite male character

This is my legitimate reaction to this question. Seriously, how to decide on a single favourite male character? Especially when my taste in books spans multiple genres?

Can you decide between Dumbledore and Nick Carraway? What about between Landon Carter and Liir? The differences to their characters and why I love them is like trying to decide which is better… cake or nuclear fusion.

No, sorry Christian Grey and Edward Cullen, you are most definitely not getting a look in.

Ok, I’m going to have to go with literary promise instead of pure amusement, and say Nick Carraway.

As explained in Day Ten: Favourite Classic Book, I love that Nick is on the outside looking in, despite being the narrator of the story. I find that he’s incredibly human, and relatable. He could easily have gotten out of the whole mess, but instead he carries on because he is enjoying this fantastic lifestyle Gatsby is presenting him, and because he wants Gatsby to like him.

Nick, for me, is like the hero at the beginning of a lot of novels, getting swept up into something he knows nothing about. He wants to do the right thing, and he wants everything to work out. Instead, with Nick, he is not the one who saves the day. He watches as everything falls apart around him, and there is little he can do to stop it. I like that. I like that disillusioned realisation that sometimes you are just a normal person who has little influence.

Dumbledore, you were a close second.
